PASADENA, Calif. -- Bowl Championship Series officials tearfully apologized early Thursday for waiting three hours before informing the celebrating University of Texas football team and its fans that the University of Southern California had, in fact, won the Rose Bowl Game and with it the national championship.
BCS coordinator Kevin Weiberg said a miscommunication with the Rose Bowl Game officiating crew led to mistaken initial reports that the Texas Longhorns had upset the USC Trojans to claim the ADT Trophy.
"We knew about 45 minutes after the initial reports that USC had actually won," Weiberg told a press conference shortly after midnight PST. "But we didn't want to interrupt Texas' celebration until we were sure we had our facts completely straight."
