It begins...

I just got a phone call from a woman who said she was calling everybody to warn them, because she had just heard from her sister and done the research online and wanted to make sure everybody knew...

...that Obama is a Muslim.

Guess I've just had confirmation that the Texas primary matters, huh?

I hope you said to her "he's not - but if he was, why would it matter?"

I missed the last part. I did try to tell her that she had Obama confused with Rep. Keith Ellison when she said he was sworn into office on the Quran...

She got that danged email--or knows someone who did.

Apparently, some Dominionist group decided to perpetrate this rumor in order to keep people from voting for Obama...

But then they'd have to vote for Hillary--so what does it serve them, really?

This election is getting weirder all the time--and there's no end in sight.

What it would serve them, from their perspective, is that the Dominionist types think Obama is more electable than Hillary. They WANT Clinton to be the Dem nominee, because they're quite sure she can't possibly win the election. They're not so confident where Obama's concerned.

What makes you think the Clintons can't be behind it?

That's just what the Republicans want you to think. And you bit.

Regardless of whether or not the Republicans want me to think Clinton did it, that doesn't answer the question: what makes you think the Clintons can't be behind it?

Put another way: what about the past behavior of Bill and Hillary Clinton precludes the possibility that they would stoop to base libel in order to gain political advantage?

Me, I don't have any particular reason to suspect them, aside from their history of demonizing all their enemies and using any dirty trick that comes to hand. Republicans could be behind it, too, or just garden-variety uncommitted bigots. But I really don't see any good reason to remove them from the suspects list, either.

It's not the past behavior of the Clintons that causes me to think the Republicans are behind it. It's the past behavior of the Republicans, who have shown themselves to be perfectly willing to spread any lie at all about the Clintons, up to and including accusing them of murder. Starting nasty rumors about Clinton's opponent and at the same time starting a nasty rumor that the Clintons were behind it? Right up their alley.

Not to mention that anti-Muslim hysteria is a Republican talking point.

True. It's also true that the Democrats want you to think that the Republicans did it, or that this unspecified Dominionist group did it. But neither truth about what they hope you'll think says anything about what actually happened.

"Some dominionist group"? That sounds like just as unfounded a rumor as the one directed at Obama.

I suspect Clinton. She has the most to gain from it, and is dishonest and ruthless enough to do it.

God forbid we should elect a president who's a religious fanatic - s/he might start a senseless war with Iraq, or something.

So fucking what?
Sorry for the French, but I just had this conversation with one of Morris's cousins in Mississippi, and haven't yet had a chance to have it with my brother in law, who has totally bought the lie. Anne was at least skeptical.

Darn right it matters! (Even if I did want to unplug the phone and bury it in a snowbank during the NH primary...I did still vote :)

Obama's book is quite readable, btw- he's a decent writer, and quite amusing in places.
