Raspberry RIPple

A moment of silence, please — or, perhaps, a moment of slurping — for Irvine Robbins, as in "Baskin-" — the co-founder, with his brother-in-law, of the ice-cream franchise of "31 Flavors" fame.

So what's your favorite flavor?

My favorite flavor?
One of my favorite demented songs is Weird Al Yankovic's "I Love Rocky Road." What does that tell you? :-) Chocoholic to the end, that's me...and if it's dark with nuts and/or mint, I'm an absolute whore.

Rest well, Mr. Robbins, and thank you.

Oh, that's sad. I love the butter pecan now, but when I was growing up it was the only place that had Black Walnut ice cream. OMG, was that ever good!

All my favorite flavors are long gone. My top favorite ever was Mandarin Chocolate Sherbet, closely followed by Chocolate Cherry Cordial and then Ambrosia. I haven't seen the latter two in over 20 years, and Mandarin Chocolate Sherbet disappeared after the mid-90s.

I miss the monthly rotation of flavors. It used to be that the only flavors they had all the time were vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry; all the rest changed once a month. Now the formula seems to be: have the two dozen or so most popular ice cream flavors all the time, plus half a dozen each of sherbet, low-fat frozen yogurt, and sugar-free ice cream; if there are any spaces remaining in the freezers after that, those 3 or 4 flavors might rotate occasionally. Funny thing, I don't go to 31 Flavors much any more.

Gee, where'd that soapbox come from?

Hmm. I'd have a hard time choosing only one. I could narrow it down to half a dozen, though.

Black raspberry, maple cream, butter crunch (preferably in a butterscotch sundae), chocolate, oreo, and strawberry cheesecake flavored... Darn. And there used to be a local place that did a Dutch Apple Pie ice cream. But I can stop at seven, really I can.
