CNN shuts down science team

CNN is shutting down its science/tech/environment unit, letting six producers and correspondent Miles O'Brien go.

Because, you know, it's not like those topics are important or anything...

I'm seeing little stories about news (print and broadcast) layoffs all *over* the place. In a world where we need more news, not less, this is not encouraging. )-:

The decision to do away with science-and-tech reporting as a standalone unit is an editorial one, not an economic one, the media company said. Instead, those stories will be integrated into other parts of the network, CNN spokeswoman Christa Robinson said. For example, the bulk of the network’s environmental coverage is part of Anderson Cooper 360’s “Planet in Peril” occasional series.

That doesn't encourage me to think that the shift will improve the objectivity and appropriate skepticism of their coverage.

important they may be - but probably not the most widely read/watched of their departments. Folks like thee and me and our contacts are not standard.

madfilkentist beat me to it.

"For example, the bulk of the network’s environmental coverage is part of Anderson Cooper 360’s “Planet in Peril” occasional series."

That sentence sums it up. They don't want science. They want scary headlines.

No loss for me in any case. I refuse to watch CNN and have for years. I do hate to see Mr. O'brien out of a job though. I recall him generally asking intelligent questions at the NASA press conferences I've seen.

Gotta make room for more important stuff like Britney's panties and Lindsey's favorite cocktails.
